Can rooflights be fitted in winter?
Yes. Rooflights go in through the winter across Essex, and the work is no less durable for it. What changes is the method: shorter working windows, closer attention to the forecast, temporary protection over any opening, and material choices that account for temperature.
The fear behind the question is usually a specific one, which is a house left open to the weather. That is not how the job runs. The roof is closed and watertight at the end of every working day, whatever the forecast has decided to do, and that principle governs how a winter programme is planned.
How an opening is managed while it is open
An opening is only genuinely open for a portion of a single day. The sequence is deliberate: protect the room below, strip back the covering, form and trim the opening, prepare or build the kerb, set the unit, weather it, then make the covering good.
Until the unit lands, the opening is covered with a tarpaulin or a temporary sheet, battened down rather than weighted, with any lap running with the fall so water sheds off rather than under. On a pitched slope that is straightforward. On a flat roof it needs more care, since there is no fall to rely on and standing water finds any unsecured edge.
Rain, and the difference between drizzle and driving weather
Light rain does not stop roof work. It slows it, and it changes what can be done in what order, but a slope can be stripped and a window fitted in drizzle without any effect on the finished detail.
The condition that stops work is sustained heavy rain arriving while an opening would have to be formed. The judgement is made in the morning against the forecast: if the window between showers is not long enough to strip, trim, set and weather, the opening does not get cut that day and other parts of the job move up the order instead. Internal work, reveal preparation and preparatory carpentry all fit into that space.
Wind, the condition that actually stops the day
Wind stops roof work sooner than rain does, and by a wide margin. Handling a glazed unit at height is the constraint. A large flat rooflight or a lantern module presents a substantial surface, and above a certain wind speed lifting one is unsafe regardless of how many people are on the roof.

It also affects bonding. No adhesive detail goes onto a frosted surface, so the first hour on a cold morning is often spent on internal preparation while the roof clears. Where a frozen surface has to be dealt with, warming and drying it is the answer rather than working over it and hoping.
Short days, and how the programme is shaped around them
In December there are around eight hours of usable daylight, and working on a roof in the dark is not sensible. That is the real difference between a December installation and a June one.
The response is planning rather than compromise. Materials are set out before the covering is touched, deliveries are timed to arrive at the start of a day rather than the middle, and the day’s target is set at what can genuinely be closed off before the light goes. A two day job may run over three days in midwinter, which is worth knowing at quotation stage.
Condensation on a newly fitted unit
New rooflights are often reported as misting in their first winter, and it is almost always surface condensation on the room side, not a fault. Warm moist air meets the coldest surface in the room, which is now the glass, and water forms.
Fresh plaster around the reveal makes it worse for several weeks, because a newly skimmed reveal releases a lot of moisture into the room. It settles as the plaster dries and as the room is ventilated. Water appearing between the panes is a different matter entirely and means a failed seal, which does not happen to a new unit.
Plaster, decoration and drying out
The internal reveal is the part of a winter job that wants patience. Plaster dries more slowly in cold, damp air, and painting a reveal before it has dried through traps moisture behind the paint film.
Background heat and steady ventilation are what move it along, not a heat gun on the surface. On a splayed reveal in a deep roof build-up, allowing longer before decoration is the whole of the winter adjustment.
