What is the smallest rooflight you can fit?
The smallest standard roof window in general circulation is around 550mm wide by 780mm high in structural size, and the smallest flat rooflights start at roughly 500mm by 500mm. Below that the answer stops being a rooflight and becomes a sun tunnel, which reaches down to a 250mm diameter duct.
Those are the manufacturing limits. The more useful question is the practical one: how small can a unit be before it stops doing anything worthwhile in the room below. That threshold is higher than people expect, and it is where most small rooflight decisions go wrong.
The smallest codes in the standard ranges
The major manufacturers all keep a narrow code in their range, sized deliberately to drop between rafters at 600mm centres. In practice that means a structural width somewhere between 550mm and 570mm, with heights running from around 780mm upwards in fixed steps.
Those codes exist because of trussed roofs. Since the webs and bottom chord of a truss are carrying engineered load, units are sized to fit between trusses rather than through them, and the narrow code is the widest thing that will do that on standard spacings. Across the estates at Great Notley, South Woodham Ferrers and Beaulieu Park it is often the only stock size available without a structural design.
Structural size against the glass you actually see
Every published dimension is the structural opening: the hole the carpenter forms. The frame occupies a band of that, so the visible glass is smaller, and on a small unit that band takes a disproportionate share.
On a 550mm wide window the frame might consume 90mm to 110mm across the width, leaving well under half a metre of daylight. Scaled up to a 1200mm unit the same frame is a minor deduction. This is why halving the structural dimensions of a rooflight cuts the daylight by considerably more than half.
Why small units are not proportionally cheap
The unit costs less, and almost nothing else does. Stripping the covering, trimming the timber, fitting a flashing kit, resetting tiles and finishing the reveal inside take much the same time whether the opening is 550mm or 1100mm wide.
Scaffold, access, waste and the building control notification are fixed regardless of size. The result is that a small rooflight is a poor value per unit of daylight, and stepping up one size in the same range is frequently the best money on the whole quotation.
The smallest opening that does real work
Daylight design usually starts at glazing area somewhere around fifteen to twenty per cent of the floor area of the room below. Run that backwards for a small room and the numbers get uncomfortable quickly.
A 550mm by 780mm window gives well under half a square metre of structural opening and less glass than that. In a hallway or a small bathroom it is genuinely transformative. In a four metre by three metre bedroom it reads as a bright rectangle on one wall and leaves the rest of the room much as it was. Smallest possible and smallest sensible are different answers.
Kerbs, and what they add around a small flat unit
A flat rooflight sits on an upstand, and the upstand adds to the footprint on the roof. The published unit size is measured to the outside of the kerb, so a small unit still needs clear roof around it: enough space to build the kerb, to dress the covering up its sides and to maintain the fall so water runs past rather than sits against it.
On a narrow flat roof with limited width, that surrounding zone can rule out a unit before the glass size does. It is worth measuring the clear flat area between abutments before choosing anything, since a small rooflight in a tight roof still needs its perimeter detail done properly.
Sun tunnels, where small is the whole idea
Below the smallest rooflight sits a different product entirely: a reflective duct carrying daylight from a dome on the roof surface down through the void into the room. Diameters commonly run from 250mm to 550mm, and the roof aperture is smaller than any glazed unit.

Rooms where a small unit is exactly right
Small rooflights earn their place in small, tall or transitional spaces. A landing at the top of a stair, where light falls down the stairwell and lifts two floors. A shower room in a loft, where obscure glazing and a restricted opener satisfy the side-facing planning condition. A utility, a WC or a walk-in wardrobe, where the alternative is a light switch every time.
In each of those the room is small enough that a modest opening is a large proportion of the floor area, and the effect is out of proportion to the invoice.
Pairs of small units, and the gap between them
Where one wide unit is not possible, two narrow ones in adjacent bays are the standard answer. It gives more glass than a single narrow window and spreads light across the room rather than concentrating it.
The rafter or truss between them stays untouched, so no structural work is needed, and the visual gap is simply the width of that timber plus the two frames. Keeping the heads and cills aligned matters: units set at different heights in the same slope read as a mistake from both inside and outside.
