How do you clean a rooflight you cannot reach?
With a water-fed pole from the ground for the outside, and a telescopic microfibre head for the inside. Those two tools cover the large majority of domestic rooflights that sit beyond arm’s reach, and neither involves getting onto the roof.
The more important point comes before the method. Most out-of-reach glazing needs cleaning far less often than people assume, and several of the choices that make it manageable are made at order stage rather than afterwards. Deciding how a rooflight will be cleaned belongs in the specification conversation, not in the second winter.
Work out whether it needs reaching at all
Pitch does most of the work. Glass at 30 degrees or steeper sheds rain and the film of dirt with it, and the steeper the plane the less anything settles. Glass on a lantern slope stays presentable for a long time with no intervention.
The problem cases are flat and near-flat units, where water lies rather than runs, and anything under a tree line. Look at the glass from inside on a bright day before deciding it needs attention. What reads as dirt is often a dry mineral bloom that the next heavy rain removes on its own.
Water-fed poles, and how far they genuinely reach
A water-fed pole is a telescopic carbon fibre pole with a brush head and a water line running up the inside. Domestic sets reach a two storey roofline comfortably; professional sets go higher, though control degrades with every extra section because the pole flexes.
The limitation on a rooflight is angle rather than height. A roof window in a slope facing the operator is straightforward. A flat rooflight in the middle of a flat roof, several metres back from the edge, cannot be reached from the ground at any pole length, because the brush has to travel horizontally across a surface you cannot see.
Why purified water is the whole trick
Pole systems run deionised or reverse osmosis water, and that is not a detail. Ordinary tap water in this part of Essex is hard, and it carries dissolved minerals that stay behind as white spotting when the water evaporates off the glass.
Purified water has those dissolved solids stripped out, so it lifts dirt and dries without residue. That is why a pole system leaves no drying marks on glass nobody can squeegee. Cleaning high glass with a hose and washing-up liquid produces a worse result than leaving it alone, because the detergent film holds dust and the hard water rings sit exactly where the sun shows them.
Self-cleaning coatings, and what they actually do
A self-cleaning outer surface carries a thin coating that does two things. It breaks down organic soiling under daylight, and it makes the surface hydrophilic, so rain runs as a sheet rather than beading into droplets that dry into spots.
It reduces the frequency of cleaning rather than removing it, and it needs rain to work, which means a sheltered or overhung rooflight benefits less. On any unit that will be difficult to reach it is a sensible upgrade, and it is ordered with the glass. Coated glass also wants non-abrasive treatment: no scouring pads, no blades, no strong solvents, or the coating goes and does not come back.
Units that turn to bring the outer face inside
Some roof windows are designed to rotate through a substantial arc and lock in a cleaning position, which brings the external face inboard where it can be washed from inside the room. Where a unit is fitted high in a slope, this is the mechanism that makes it maintainable at all.
It is a specification decision. Whether that facility exists depends on the hinge type chosen at order, and it cannot be added to a unit that was not built for it. On any window above comfortable reach, it is worth asking the question before the order goes in rather than working out the answer with a ladder later.
The inside face of high glass
Internal glazing on a lantern or a tall reveal collects far less than the outside, but it does collect: cooking residue in a kitchen, dust off the ceiling, and the light film that settles on any horizontal surface.
A telescopic pole with a microfibre pad handles it. Damp, not wet, working in overlapping passes, then a dry pad over the same area to take the moisture off before it dries in streaks. Once or twice a year is plenty in a living space and rather more often above a hob. A step ladder on a level floor with somebody footing it beats a chair every time.
Roof access, and why standing on the covering is the wrong instinct
The temptation on a flat roof is to walk out and clean the unit by hand. Two problems. A single ply or felt covering is not designed as a walking surface and takes damage from grit underfoot, and glass in a rooflight, unless it was specified as walk-on, is not a floor and will not hold a person.
Where genuine roof access is required, that is work for someone with the right access equipment and a safe method, not a domestic ladder against a gutter. A walk-on rooflight is the exception, and it is engineered for the load from the outset.
The kerb line, which matters more than the glass
The genuinely useful job around a rooflight is not the glass. It is clearing leaves, moss and grit from the perimeter, the kerb line and the drainage path away from it, particularly on flat roofs under the mature trees common in older Chelmsford and Colchester streets.
Water problems around rooflights almost always start as a drainage route that quietly closed itself with debris. Five minutes clearing it each autumn is worth more than any amount of attention to the pane.
