Does fitting a rooflight weaken the roof?
Not when the opening is trimmed properly. Cutting a rafter removes a load path, and the whole point of trimming is to build a new one before the old one is taken away. The timbers either side are doubled, horizontal trimmers are fixed at the head and the sill, and the load that used to run down the cut rafter now runs into those trimmers, sideways into the doubled rafters, and on down to the wall plate as it always did. Done correctly, the roof around a rooflight is stiffer than it was.
Done badly, or not done at all, the answer is different. This page sets out how the load actually moves, what the limits of timber trimming are, why trussed roofs are a separate conversation, and what an untrimmed opening looks like when it turns up on a survey.
The direct answer, and the condition attached
A roof is a system of members sharing load, not a set of independent sticks. Take one member out and its share has to be redistributed, which is achievable and routine, or it has to be absorbed by whatever is nearest, which is not.
The condition is that the redistribution is designed rather than assumed. On a domestic opening for a single roof window that design is standard carpentry with published span tables behind it. On a larger opening it becomes a calculation. The dividing line between those two situations is the single most useful thing to establish early.
How load travels through a cut roof
In a traditional cut roof the rafters carry the weight of the covering, the snow on it and the wind pressing on it, from the ridge down to the wall plate. Each rafter takes the load from half a bay either side of it. A purlin, where there is one, breaks the rafter span in two and pushes its share into the gable walls or into struts standing off an internal wall.
Cut one rafter and its two half bays have nowhere to go. The trimmers pick that load up at the head and sill of the opening and hand it sideways to the neighbouring rafters, which is why those neighbours are doubled: they are now carrying one and a half times what they carried before.
What doubling a rafter actually achieves
A second rafter fixed alongside the first roughly doubles the section’s capacity in bending, which comfortably covers the extra half share arriving from the trimmer. It is fixed with structural screws or bolts at a defined spacing rather than with nails alone, because the two members have to act as one rather than as two pieces of timber lying next to each other.
The doubling timber runs the full length of the original rafter, from wall plate to ridge, not just past the opening. Stopping it short puts a step change in stiffness exactly where the load is heaviest, which is how a slope ends up with a visible dip above a window ten years later.
Where timber trimming stops being enough
Two rafters cut is still ordinary carpentry on most domestic roofs. Three starts to concentrate load, and at that point the trimmers are carrying enough that their own span becomes the governing number rather than the rafters they support.
As a working guide, an opening wider than about a metre and a half across the slope, or one that removes more than two rafters, gets a structural check rather than a rule of thumb. That is not a barrier, it is a calculation and often a deeper trimmer or a flitch plate. Where a beam does become the answer, the detail is set out on structural openings and steel.
Trussed roofs, where the answer changes
A trussed rafter is not a rafter. It is an engineered frame in which every web is carrying a specific force in tension or compression, and the bottom chord is a structural tie holding the feet of the roof together against spread. Cutting a web is not equivalent to cutting a rafter, and cutting a bottom chord is a serious matter.
On the estates at Great Notley, South Woodham Ferrers, Beaulieu Park and across the Harlow and Basildon stock, the sensible route is to place the unit in the clear space between two trusses, where nothing structural is touched at all. Where a truss genuinely has to be altered, it is designed by an engineer with a specified plated or bolted solution, and Building Control sees the detail.
Flat roof joists, and cutting across the span
On a flat roof the same principle applies with one extra wrinkle. Joists run in one direction, and an opening that runs parallel with them is straightforward, because only one or two are affected and the trimmers span a short distance between neighbours.
An opening that runs across the joists is the harder case, because the trimmer at each end is now spanning the full width of the opening while carrying the cut ends of everything crossing it. That trimmer is doubled or trebled, or becomes a steel where the width is significant. It is the reason a lantern is often oriented to suit the joists rather than the room, and why the joist direction is one of the first things checked in the ceiling void.
Signs of an opening that was never trimmed
These turn up more often than they should, usually on units fitted by a general builder as part of a wider job in the eighties or nineties. The tells are consistent and visible from inside the loft.
- A rafter cut clean through with nothing horizontal picking up the cut ends.
- Trimmers made of a lighter section than the rafters they are carrying.
- Trimmers skew nailed into position rather than fixed with hangers or structural screws.
- No doubling on the rafters either side, so a single member carries a bay and a half.
- A visible sag in the covering above the head of the window, read by eye along the slope from the gable.
Part A, and the check that gets recorded
Altering roof structure engages Part A of the Building Regulations, and forming an opening is an alteration by definition. That is one of the reasons rooflight work is notifiable, alongside the thermal requirement in Part L.

The weight of the unit itself
Worth putting in proportion, because people expect it to be the issue and it rarely is. A domestic roof window with a double glazed sealed unit weighs less per square metre than the tiles and battens it displaces, so a trimmed opening usually reduces the dead load on that part of the roof slightly.
Triple glazing, laminated panes and walk-on build-ups change that picture, and walk-on glass adds an imposed load from people standing on it, which is designed for from the outset. For an ordinary roof window in an ordinary Essex slope, the timber is the question and the glass is not.
