Do rooflights need blinds?

The short answer

Not always, but more often than people expect, and the decision has to be made at order rather than after the unit is in. That is the part that catches homeowners out. A blind for a rooflight runs in side channels built into the frame, and if those channels were not specified the sensible options narrow considerably.

Whether you need one comes down to two questions: does anybody sleep under it, and which way does the roof plane face. A north facing rooflight over a hallway needs nothing. A west facing unit over a bedroom needs a blackout blind and probably solar control glass as well.

The rooms where a blind earns its place

Bedrooms first, and by a distance. An east facing roof window over a bed makes its point at half past four on a June morning, and no amount of glass specification changes that, because the issue is light rather than heat.

Then home offices and television rooms, where the problem is glare on a screen rather than overall brightness. Then any room where the glass is directly overhead and low winter sun tracks across it at eye level. The pattern is that blinds are about controlling light at specific times, which is a different problem from controlling heat.

The rooms where the glass does the work instead

Kitchens, dining spaces, utility rooms, bathrooms, landings and hallways rarely want a blind at all. Nobody is sleeping there and nobody is looking at a screen, so the only real concern is summer heat.

That is a glazing question rather than a blind question. Solar control coating on the outer pane is a permanent, invisible, maintenance free answer that works whether anybody is at home or not. In a rear extension kitchen with a large flat rooflight, the correct answer is usually good glass and no blind, which is also the cheaper answer over ten years.

The two are frequently presented as alternatives and they solve overlapping but distinct problems. It is worth being clear about which does what.

An internal blind stops light after it has passed the glass, so the energy is already in the room and is re-radiated from the blind fabric. That is why a blind alone never fully solves overheating on a south or west facing plane, and why the pairing that actually works is solar control glass for the heat and a blind for the darkness.

Blackout, and what it really means

Blackout fabric is opaque, usually aluminium backed, and on a rooflight it only performs if the edges are sealed. A blind that stops fifty millimetres short of the frame on each side lets a bright halo through, and in a bedroom that halo is the entire problem.

This is where the side channels matter most. The fabric runs inside them, so the edge is closed and the room genuinely goes dark. A blind hung across the opening on brackets, without channels, sags away from the glass on a sloped or horizontal plane because gravity is pulling it out of the frame rather than down it. On a horizontal flat rooflight that sag is severe enough that channels are effectively mandatory.

A blackout blind without side channels is a dimmer switch, not a blackout.

Why the channels have to be there from the start

The channel is part of the frame. On a roof window it is a routed groove in the side of the sash or a proprietary track fitted to the outer frame, and both are specified when the unit is ordered.

Retrofitting an integrated blind to a unit that was never provided for usually means an external cassette fitted around the frame, or a compromise blind that does not close at the edges. Neither is as good as the version ordered with the unit, and the cost difference at order is modest compared with the cost of solving it afterwards. This is the same logic as running a cable for an electric opener at first fix: trivial then, disruptive later.

Internal, external and the difference in effect

External awnings sit on the outside of the glass, usually as a fine mesh, and they stop the heat before it reaches the pane. They are much more effective thermally than anything internal, they still allow a view out, and they take the weather, so they are a consumable in a way an internal blind is not.

Internal blinds are protected, longer lived and available in blackout, pleated and venetian forms. On a west facing plane in a room that overheats, an external awning plus solar control glass will beat any internal blind. In a bedroom that needs to be dark, only an internal blackout blind does the job. Some installations sensibly have both.

Rods, motors and solar heads on a blind

Reach decides this more than budget. A blind on a roof window within arm’s length of the floor works fine on a control rod, and a rod is cheap, reliable and has nothing to go wrong.

Above roughly two and a half metres, an operating pole becomes irritating within a month and then simply stops being used. At that height electric or solar operation is the honest answer. Solar powered blinds carry a small photovoltaic cell and a battery in the head, which means no cable at all and is the usual route on a retrofit. Mains electric is neater on a new installation where a cable can be run at first fix, and it is worth running that cable even if the blind is fitted later.

Blinds on a lantern, and why they behave differently

A roof lantern is a pitched structure with multiple glazed facets, so there is no single plane to cover. Blinds for lanterns are either a set of pleated panels running in channels on each facet, or a horizontal system across the base of the lantern at ceiling level.

The facet system keeps the shape of the lantern visible and costs considerably more, because there are four or six blinds rather than one. The horizontal system at the base is simpler and cheaper, and it closes off the lantern entirely when drawn, which loses the volume that was the reason for fitting a lantern in the first place. On a lantern, glass specification is usually the better first line of defence, and blinds are the refinement.

The three questions that settle a blind before ordering

Three questions settle it before anything is ordered. Is anybody sleeping under this glass. Which way does the plane face. And how far above the finished floor is the frame.
