Can you replace just the glass in a rooflight?
Sometimes, and it comes down to one thing: whether the pane is a separate component held in by a removable bead, or bonded into the frame as a factory assembly. Site glazed units can be re-glazed. Bonded units cannot, because the glass is doing structural work and the adhesive is the joint.
Work out which you have and the answer follows immediately. Roof lanterns and many flat rooflight systems are site glazed. Most centre pivot and top hung roof windows are not. There is no judgement involved, only the way the thing was built.
How to tell a site glazed frame from a bonded one
Look at the outside edge of the glass where it meets the frame, which usually means a photograph taken from a window above or from the garden.
A site glazed unit shows a distinct capping or bead sitting proud of the frame, held by screws or clipped over a carrier, with a visible gasket line under it. A bonded unit shows glass running out to the very edge with a black band around the perimeter and no separate cover strip at all, because the structural silicone is behind that band. From inside, a site glazed frame usually has an internal bead you can see a joint line on. A bonded one presents an uninterrupted pane.
Roof lanterns, where a single pane can come out
A lantern is built as a frame of rafters and hips with individual panes dropped into rebates and held by external cappings, so one pane can be lifted without touching the others. That is the design intent, and it is one of the practical advantages of a lantern over a monolithic unit.
The work is done from outside, from a tower or a scaffold depending on the height. The capping comes off, the failed pane is lifted clear, the rebate is cleaned back, new gaskets and glazing tape go in, the new unit is set and the capping goes back with new fixings. A single pane in an accessible lantern is a half day.
Flat rooflight systems, and the two families
Flush flat rooflights split cleanly into two construction types and the split matters more than the brand on the label.

Roof windows, and the sash the glass belongs to
In a modern centre pivot or top hung window, the sealed unit is bonded to the sash on a production line, with the pane contributing to the racking stiffness of the frame. Taking it out is a factory operation, not a roof operation.
Manufacturers acknowledge this by selling a replacement sash rather than a replacement pane. On some ranges that sash drops onto the existing hinges and the outer frame stays in the roof, which is an elegant answer when the frame itself is sound and the flashing is in good order. On older ranges the hinge geometry has moved and the whole window is the sensible unit of exchange.
Matching a new pane to what is around it
On a lantern or a run of flat lights, one new pane sits next to several old ones and the difference can be obvious in the wrong light.
Three things drift over time. Low emissivity coatings have changed generation, so a current soft coat reads slightly different in tone from one made fifteen years ago. Solar control glass has become more neutral, so an older tinted pane beside a modern one shows a colour step. And the outer surface of an old pane carries fine weathering that scatters light differently. Where the difference would be visible from inside, glazing the whole lantern at once is worth pricing before deciding.
The gaskets, and why they are always renewed
Nobody puts a new pane back on old rubber, and the reason is that gaskets have a shorter life than glass.
EPDM and silicone gaskets take a compression set: after fifteen years under load they hold the shape they were squeezed into and no longer spring back against a new pane. Ultraviolet hardens the exposed lip. Setting blocks under the pane also compress and migrate, which is how a heavy unit ends up bearing on the frame corner rather than on its blocks. Every re-glaze includes new gaskets, new setting blocks and, where the system uses it, new glazing tape.
Drainage paths inside the frame
Site glazed rooflight frames are drained systems. They are designed on the assumption that a small amount of water gets past the outer gasket, and there are channels and weep holes at the sill to take it back out.
Those channels fill with dust, moss and insect debris over the years, and a re-glaze is the one moment they are properly accessible. Clearing them is a few minutes with the capping off and it is the difference between a drained frame and a bath. On a lantern this is worth doing on every rafter, not only the one being worked on.
Lead times, and the arithmetic that decides it
A made to measure sealed unit to a survey dimension typically runs two to four weeks, longer for laminated, solar control or an unusual thickness. That is the same wait as a complete new rooflight in many ranges.
Which is where the sums usually land. If a lantern has one failed pane and eleven good ones, re-glazing that pane is obviously right. If a fifteen year old flat unit has a failed pane and gaskets, cappings and fixings that are all the same age, a new unit brings a current thermal specification, a fresh guarantee and a perimeter detail brought up to standard for a figure that is not far apart.
