Can a flat rooflight go over a shower?
Yes. A flat rooflight directly above a shower enclosure is ordinary work, and in a small bathroom it does more for the room than any other single change. The conditions up there are harsher than anywhere else in the house, so the specification shifts. Glass, ventilation, electrical zoning and the question of how you will ever clean it all want settling before a unit is ordered rather than after the ceiling is opened.

Why a bathroom roof is a different environment
A running shower puts warm water vapour into the air faster than any other domestic appliance. The air above the enclosure sits near saturation for the length of the shower and for a good while afterwards, and it rises, which means it arrives at the highest and coldest surface in the room first. That surface is now your glass.
In a kitchen the moisture load is intermittent and the room is usually larger. In a bathroom it is concentrated, repeated twice a day, and often in a room with a single small window that nobody opens in January. The physics is not a fault in the rooflight. It is a design input, and it changes what you order.
Glass specification directly over a shower
The number that matters here is the temperature of the inner pane. Condensation forms when that surface drops below the dew point of the air touching it, so the whole strategy is keeping the inner pane warm.
That means a genuinely low U-value rather than a nominally compliant one, a warm edge spacer rather than an aluminium one, and argon in the cavity. Triple glazing earns its place over a shower more than almost anywhere else in a house, because the inner pane sits further from the outside temperature. A unit that would be perfectly sensible over a hallway can be the wrong call over a shower tray, and the difference in cost is modest compared with the difference in behaviour on a cold morning.
Extract ventilation, and where the rooflight helps
Glass alone will not solve a bathroom. The moisture has to leave the room, and Building Regulations Part F sets the extract rate for a bathroom at fifteen litres per second, with the fan running on and overrun after the light goes off.
An opening rooflight adds purge ventilation, which is a different thing. It clears the room quickly after use, particularly in summer, because the opening is at the highest point and the warm wet air is already heading that way. The combination works well: a mechanical extract sized properly, plus an opener you can trigger from a wall switch or a handset. What does not work is treating the rooflight as a substitute for the fan.
Electrical zones above a shower enclosure
Part P and BS 7671 divide a bathroom into zones by proximity to water. The area directly above a shower up to 2.25 metres from the floor is Zone 1, and anything electrical in it needs an appropriate IP rating and RCD protection.
Most bathroom ceilings sit above that height, and a rooflight in a flat roof usually sits higher still because of the kerb and the reveal. Even so, an electric actuator over a shower is specified with the zone written down rather than assumed, and the wiring is run at first fix by an electrician who is notifying the work. Solar powered openers sidestep the cabling entirely and are worth considering where the roof gets reasonable light.
Positioning relative to the shower head
Where the unit sits within the ceiling changes the experience more than people expect. Directly over the tray, the glass gets the full column of rising steam and it will mist first. Set a little to one side, over the dry half of the room, it stays clearer and still lights the shower properly, because daylight from above spreads.
There is a second reason to think about position. Any condensation that does form on the inner pane runs to the low edge of the glass and drips from there. Over a tray that is irrelevant. Over a painted plasterboard reveal and a timber vanity, it is not. Set the fall of the unit so the low edge is above the wettest part of the room.
Obscured glass, privacy and what is actually overlooked
An overhead rooflight is rarely overlooked. Sightlines into a roof plane require someone at a height and an angle that most gardens do not offer, and the reflection off the outer pane makes daytime viewing from outside close to impossible.
Where the flat roof sits below a neighbouring first floor window, which is common on Chelmsford terraces with a rear addition, obscure glazing is the straightforward answer. It is specified as the inner pane of the sealed unit, with the obscure face inward, so the outer surface stays smooth and sheds water and dirt normally. A sandblasted or acid etched finish gives even diffusion without the pattern reading as a bathroom window from the garden.
Blinds in a humid room
Most bathroom rooflights do not need a blind at all, which is a relief because a blind in a humid room is a maintenance item. Where one is wanted, for a bathroom that doubles as a dressing room or an east facing roof over a bath, the honest specification is an integrated blind in side channels with a moisture resistant fabric.
Fabric blinds in bathrooms take up moisture and eventually mark. A perforated or coated fabric handles it better than a cotton weave. Order the provision with the unit, because the side channels are part of the frame and cannot be added afterwards.
Cleaning glass three metres above a wet floor
This is the practical question nobody asks until the first spring. A bathroom rooflight collects a film on the inside from soap aerosol and body oils, and it goes hazy faster than a rooflight anywhere else in the house.
Plan for it. A unit within reach of a step ladder standing on a solid floor is easy. A unit over a shower tray, with a sloping ceiling and a glass screen underneath, is not, and a telescopic pole with a microfibre head becomes the only sensible tool. A self cleaning coating on the outer pane handles the weather side and does nothing for the inside, so the internal access still has to work.
Essex bathrooms, and the roofs they sit under
The commonest version of this job in Chelmsford is a bathroom in a Victorian or interwar rear addition with a small flat roof over it, often felted, sometimes with an old plastic dome already in place. The deck is usually timber, the span is short, and the opening is straightforward to trim.
The second version is a first floor bathroom on a post war estate at Great Notley or South Woodham Ferrers, where the ceiling sits under a trussed roof and a flat rooflight is not the answer at all.
